CALL for PRESENTERS: NCAA IGNITE SESSIONS

49TH ANNUAL GATHERING of NATIONAL COUNCIL OF ARTS ADMINISTRATORS & the 58th ANNUAL GATHERING INTERNATIONAL COUNCIL OF FINE ARTS DEANS
SAN DIEGO, CA, October 6-7, 2022

NCAA invites its members to apply to present an Ignite Session at one of pre-conference events. This 90-minute session will feature a succession of lightning presentations on the following topic:

Effective Communication: The Ups & Downs

Good academic leadership implies the ability to effectively communication both up and down the administrative ladder –from student body to president—and vis versa. The daily flood of emails, deadlines, and new directives can test even the best communicator. For better or worse, how an administrator advocates, listens, and reacts will shape short-term outcomes and may have consequences for the institution long after.

Our panel seeks stories and examples of innovative tools and strategies for effective communication with diverse academic constituents. How can an administrator start off on the right foot by creating clear expectations? How do you build objective consensus and support from all levels of the organization? When do you end the conversation? What are the best methods for objectively communicating during difficult times?

Please feel free to interpret broadly. You may wish to share your thoughts about an idea or project, provide insights that include the good and the bad, or perhaps you might want to present a speculative idea not yet implemented. We are, of course, available to assist and support in developing a topic.

APPLY: Interested members should express intent and send a brief bio by June 27, 2022 to Charlie Kanwischer ([email protected]) and Sarah Meyer ([email protected]).

SUBMITTING MATERIALS:

Those selected to present will be asked to submit the following items by Monday, September 19, 2022 by end of business. This will allow us time to import and troubleshoot any technical problems.

1. Your topic title

2. Very brief bio (one or two sentences)

3. PowerPoint presentation

  • Each topic will be a short slideshow presentation, not to exceed 8 minutes in length.
  • Visuals will consist of approximately 20 images, timed approximately 25 seconds per image.
  • Each presentation will ideally introduce a "problem statement or story" and/or provide a “solution” in the form of an insight(s), tool(s), new idea(s), or interesting perspective(s).
  • Presentations are due two weeks before the session and will be loaded into a single, continuous presentation.
  • We typically have four-six presenters for a 90-minute session. We are giving each person a maximum of 8 minutes, if you choose to use it. This means, with 20 images, you can set the time per slide to 25 seconds.
